A large late 18th Century English antique tobacco snuff box of oval form and unusual construction.
The upper section, including the lid, hinges, and sides are constructed solely from toughened hide/leather. The lid is made from five sheets of laminated hide making it incredibly strong. It opens to reveal an interior void of any fittings.
The base is constructed from pine (deal).
The leather has been hand-painted to resemble an expensive tropical timber, possibly mahogany.
This is a good looking box with a great skin/colour.
Provenance - Sourced within North Yorkshire.
