A late 18thC Dutch antique delftware plate decorated in underglaze blue, depicting a male and female figure next to a smokehouse, with a fleet of schooners / fishing vessels in full sail yonder.

This is an individual plate No.11 from "The Herring Catch" series, entitled "No.11 Rooke der Haring of Bokemhang - Translated, "The smoking of the herring or mackerel."

The series of plates, made to celebrate the wealth generated by the Herring Industry of Holland, including this example, were manufactured circa 1780, by the De Porceleyne Bijl (The Porcelain Axe Factory - Est. 1657 - Closed 1803), Delft, Holland. This can be identified by the hatchet mark verso, introduced in 1764.

An almost identical example, from the same series, is held in the collection of The Minneapolis Institute of Art, USA.

Condition -  The rim has some minor fritting. Please refer to the images. This is a very rare plate and displays well.

Size: Diameter 23 cm (9")
