A pair of 16thC antique carved oak portrait panels of "Romayne" type displaying characteristics of both the Renaissance and earlier Gothic Period.
Each with a head-and-shoulder side-profile portrait of a male set within a roundel, retaining much of their original gilding. Each figure is portrayed wearing a hat, ruff and jerkin. Below, each is decorated with carved blind-gothic tracery.
It is likely that these panels were salvaged from a period piece of furniture now broken up.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - surface wear is commensurate with age. Please refer to the images. There are traces of old inactive worm (historic and treated too as a precautionary measure). The reverse of each panel has a layer of old white gloss paint which cannot be detacted from the front. These panels display very well.
